ABOUT

Carson Vibbert was born in Lakeland, Florida, in 1999 to a home of suburbanite personas. He soon grew to realized how off-kilter he felt from both his family and his possible friends: a presence lingering in the back of his mind to this day. In 2018 he moved to Sarasota to attend Ringling College of Art and Design where he graduates from in 2022 with a major in Photography and Imaging and a minor in Business of Art and Design. In 2020 he attended and completed a year of intensive photography education under the Creative Practices program at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in NYC. Directly after graduating from ICP Carson began work as a gallery intern at the Art Center of Sarasota, where he assisted and led curation, hanging and exhibition preparations before his senior year. Carson’s senior thesis focuses on birth trauma, individuation and liminality using polaroids, poetry, fire, etchings, projections, and lantern slides.

His work has been recently exhibited in the following shows: the Spectrum color exhibition (2020) and Shoganai, an advanced lighting exhibition (2022), both located at Ringling College of Art and Design. In 2021, five of his digital photographs from his project titled “...i found a memory of you grinding between my teeth…” were displayed  as part of ICP’s exhibition The Year That Was (2021) located at ICP’s facility in the Lower East Side of NYC.

Feeling trapped, your fingers inching along the chasm between us. From self portraiture to abstractions of form, exploring the spaces in between seems almost sacrilegious: between love and hate, conscious and subconscious, me and myself. Often emerging from a place of liminality, unthought of, it becomes a constant state of discovery, fragmentation, realization and recovery. An attempt to embrace an affliction often ends with affirming one’s fears, this is no exception. Carson’s work slinks into a quivering subconsciousness in order to obtain some notion of familiarity: something to grasp onto, or at least attempt to.
